2009 March Madness: Prom Songs

I hate basketball and everything that comes with it. Screw you basketball for making the next however many days of sports talk radio filled with this dribble. But with a little help from a local radio show I listen to I decided to make up a bracket. A more interesting/more fun bracket. A bracket of sweet prom songs.

We all got a Limo Bracket

Now this is important. I won't do this often. But if you read this blog this will be the only time I ask for you to vote via the comments section.  You don't have to make a profile, just be anonymous. The more votes we have the better But we need votes to truly decide what is the 2009 winner in the prom song bracket. Hope you enjoy listening to these classics as much as I did.

Corsage Bracket:
Hello whomps on Clapton.
Wham has a tough game but beats out Richard Marx.
Hello defeats Wham to take the bracket.

Did you get in her pants Bracket:
Again...2 lopsided victories in the first round.
Peter Gabrielle stomping on Heat Wave & Bryan Adams overwhelming a weaker opponent in Vanessa Williams.
Set up a good 2nd round game with Gabrielle v Adams...going with Gabrielle on this one.

Limo Bracket:
All and all a weaker bracket...save for one monster team: Extreme rolls through without any opposition.

Photo Line Bracket:
Feeling that Air Supply got a raw deal with the 4 seed, considering the weakness of seeds 1-2. Nonetheless, they upset Boys2Men and go on to when the bracket.

My Final four:
Lionel Ritchie - Hello
Peter Gabrielle - In Your Eyes
Extreme - More Than Words
Air Supply - All Out of Love

Air Supply is outgunned at this stage of the race. And Extreme just doesn't have the depth of the other two.

In a final between Peter and Lionel? Hello? Is it me your looking for? I can see it in your eyes? That's right, Lionel takes it home.

Though don't trust my opinion, I didn't go to prom.

Corsage.
1) Hello
2) Careless Whisper

Pants.
1) In your Eyes
3) With an upset, Save the "Vest" for Last. A classic

Limo.
1) More than Words
2) Here and Now

Photo Line.
1) All out of Love--with the upset. No love making.
2) Can't Fight this Feeling. Don't know the other one

Also, whoever did this seeding (Brian) is extremely accurate and nailed the #1 and 2 seeds. Clear favorites.

Bubble songs sadly left out of the "big dance": Aerosmith: I Don't Wanna Miss A Thing; Chris De Burgh: Lady in Red; Bryan Adams: Everything I Do (I do it for you)

CORSAGE:
1) RITCHIE over 4) CLAPTON
3) MARX over 2) WHAM (what is wham? doing in here anyway, and how did they get a 3 seed?)

PANTS:
1) GABRIEL over 4) WAVE
3) WILLIAMS over 2) ADAMS (but Adams would have won if the song was "have you ever really loved a woman. or that song from the 3 musketeers. or obviously, everything i do...)

LIMO:
4) O'CONNOR over 1) EXTREME (keep in mind that this is a terrible seeding. "nothing compares is the most powerful song ever recorded, and "more than words" is a close 2nd. not fair at all. i love extreme, and this is a finals match up, not a first round. boo to the selection committee)
3) CETERA over 2) VANDROSS (how did vandross even get in this thing? give me bob marley, "no woman no cry")

PHOTO
1) BOYS over 4) AIR (you can't fight how powerful singing "i'll make love to you" into the ear of the girl that you brought to prom because her hot friend would never go with you and you just brought her b/c you wanted to double with the hot friend and the douchebag quarterback she came with. that's right... sing "i'll make love to you" while staring at the prom queen across the dance floor and wish that she would even glance in your direction)
3) POISON over 2) REO (tough call, but poison brings some bittersweet to the party that is needed.

ELITE 8
CORSAGE: MARX over RITCHIE
PANTS: GABRIEL over WILLIAMS
LIMO: O'CONNOR over CETErA
PHOTO: BOYS over POISON

FINAL 4
GABRIEL over MARX
BOYS over O'CONNOR

CHAMPIONSHIP
BOYS over GABRIEL

picture it. it all makes sense

so you have 4 friends (ethan, adri, justin, taylor)...and some tool named chad who mocked your basketball hatred.

where is the vast readership? we need to consolidate and conquer...we need more readers; moreover, we need more commenters.

This topic is pure genius and should be respected as such. It is the quintessential soft toss waiting to be blasted over the fence by the casual reader. I for one gave my breakdown...anticipating the witty commentary of other readers representing a variety of personalities.

Unfortunately, there seems to be little variety...as i know all of the current commenters except the aforementioned tool named Chad...sorry Chad...but read your comment...not a good first step forward

My stupid job is really distracting me from these this vital decision. Hopefully, I'm not too late for my votes to count.

Corsage:
1) Wonderful Tonight

2) Right here waiting

Pants:
1) In your eyes

2) Save the Best for Last (sometimes the sun goes round the moon)

Limo:
1)More Than Words (going to be hard to beat)

2. Here and Now

Photo:
1) I'll make love to you (though I'd like to nominate End of the Road in its place. A much more prolific B2M song)

2) tough call actually. I like these songs equally but I'll give the nod to Can't Fight This Feeling Anymore because damn that's so true.

I'll wait for the next round to do more voting but I'll say in my mind the final showdown would be between Marx and Extreme. Both so good, so bad, and so promalicous.

I'd also like to propose a bonus bracket:

The 'I'd Didn't Get Any' Bracket:

Toni Braxton, Unbreak My Heart v. Bonnie Raitt, I Can't Make You Love Me

so what i wrote this out, bracket style, on a piece of paper just to get a better visual.

so what i've been contemplating my choices for the last couple days.

so what i'm still a bit undecided.

CORSAGE:
Ritchie triumphs Clapton in a shut out. Go cry on your guitar strings Clapton.
Wham gets schooled by Marx.

PANTS (wouldn't it be a dress? I mean...this is prom):
Gabriel over Wave, any day
Adams bitch slaps Williams

LIMO:
O'Connor takes Extreme, close shave.
Vandross leaves Cetera in the dust.

PHOTO:
Poor Air Supply. Didn't have a chance against Boys II Men.
REO Speedwagon forfeits to Poison. Have you seen Bret's extensions?

FINAL FOUR:
Due to its creep factor, Ritchie's 'Hello' takes a back seat to Gabriel's 'In Your Eyes'
O'Conner takes it in an upset against Boys II Men. tis about heart my friends. its gotta come from here. inside. heart.

CHAMPIONSHIP:
Shit this is difficult.
I have to go with Gabriel over O'Conner. In over time. Double over time.

Not without claw marks and torn teal cumberbund, GABRIEL TAKES IT!!! 'IN YOUR EYES' IS THE BEST PROM SONG EVER!

sigh.
this was hard.
good one mr. bad example.

I didn't realize I was supposed to pick winners for each round... so,

Corsage: Hello
Pants: In Your Eyes
Limo: More than Words
Photo: Can't Fight This Feeling

Finals Matchup: Hello vs. More Than Words
Winner: More Than Words

I'm considering posting anonymous comment as well...just to further my personal agenda.

Is that so wrong?
If so, I don't want to be right.

although it has taken me a while to join the party, I have finally figured this whole blog/commenting thing out so here it goes... I have taken about a week to listen to all of the songs that made the cut (thank you bk for the convenient links to the music videos, john candy in a tux? really wham!? interesting choice)and have taken in to consideration the prom memories attatched to each song and am now ready to vote

My Elite Eight Choices

Corsage:
4) Wonderful Tonight
vs.
2) Careless Whisper

*hello has a high creepy factor and i dont understand the draw, whereas every girl in the room is waiting to be told she "looks wonderful tonight"

Pants:
1) In Your Eyes
vs.
3) Save the Best for Last

*As far as bracket placement goes I think Save the Best for Last and B2M's I'll Make Love to You could have easily swapped catagories and still made it the the elite eight

Limo:
1) More than Words
vs.
3) Glory of Love

*I agree with J-town that Nothing Compares is a far more passionate song but I dont think it fits into the theme of prom romance as well, although if we do include the bonus bracket of "didnt get any/we broke up a week before prom and he went with some other girl" Sinead O'Connor would make the cut

Photo line:
1) I'll Make Love to You
vs.
2) Cant Fight This Feeling

*I dont understand your prom experience if your Photo Line final 2 are not the same as mine

BK- are you going to post the elite eight based on the votes and then we can vote from there or should i post all of the way to the finals?

*Adri- good call on the bubble songs

I need to finish my voting...

Corsage:
Right Here Waiting wins over Wonderful Tonight. Both swoon-worthy but Marx has more passion than Clapton.

Pants:
This is a tough match up. I personally love me some Vanessa Williams but biases aside, there is only one sure-fire way to the pants. And that's by evoking memories of Lloyd Dobbler and his damn boombox. Therefore, In your eyes is the true victor.

Limo:
More than words. No contest.

Photo:
My nod goes to B2M on this one. Close game though.

Gabrielle and B2M put up a good fight but the championship match is really between Marx and Extreme, as it should be.

The match goes to Extreme because More Than Words perpetuates every prom fantasy of young girls. They read into their dates silence by thinking "they are so overwhelmed with how they feel that they can't express it in words". Probably not true, they are probably thinking about the Pants bracket. But who cares, the dream lives on.

Where as Right Here Waiting is a fantastic song but the lyrics will crush the promtasy (prom fantasy) when she comes back from the bathroom to find her jackhole date is in fact not, right there waiting, but scamming on that bitch from homeroom at the punch bowl. The dream is dead.

Long live the dream. Long live Extreme.

Brian,

What's next? Are you going to tally up the first round wins and then have everyone vote again?
